Washington tops the Pilots 7-4 as Portland senior Matthew Peters extends his hitting streak to eight games with a pair of hits
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Matthew Peters knocked in two runs with two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games, but the Washington Huskies held off the Pilots 7-4 in a non-conference baseball game Monday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Peters has 20 hits in his last 36 at-bats for a .556 batting average during his streak.
The loss drops Portland to 12-24 overall, while Washington improves to 25-14.
Freshman Blaine Hardy (2-2) takes the loss for the Pilots, who used four pitchers in the game. Hardy gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits in 4.0 innings. Junior Sean Sargent allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.0 innings of relief, while sophomore Ari Ronick surrendered two runs in 1.0 of work. Junior Austin Dirkx was not charged with a run on three hits in 1.2 innings.
Usual Washington closer Elliott Cribby (5-3) picked up the win in his first career start for the Huskies. Cribby, who has eight saves this season, allowed two unearned runs on three hits in 6.0 innings. Washington used four pitchers for the game, including Tim Lincecum, a pre-season All-America selection. Lincecum pitched the final two innings and struck out six to record his second save of the season.
UW took the early lead with a three-run home run from Matt Hague in the top of the first inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, Hague turned on a pitch and sent it high and deep over the left field wall for his fifth home run of the year.
The Huskies added another run in the third inning to make it a 4-0 lead. UP got on the board with a pair in the bottom of the third. With two on and two out, Peters sent a frozen rope over the center fielder’s head for a two-run double. It’s the tenth double this spring for Peters.
Still up 4-2 in the sixth, Matt Lane double home Curt Rindal to give the Huskies a 5-2 advantage.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases empty and one out, Portland senior Nik Kosach (pictured) blasted a 2-0 fastball well over the right field fence for his first home run of the year. The solo shot pulled Portland within 5-3.
Washington responded with a pair in the top of the seventh. With two runners on and one out, Ronick intentionally walked Zach Clem to load the bases. After Dirkx relieved Ronick, Trevor Peterson sent the first pitch to center field for a two-run single, making it 7-3. Dirkx then induced an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play from Ryan Anderson.
Sophomore Danny Meier led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left field. Meier then advanced to third on a wild pitch, before Peters walked to make it runners on the corners with no outs. That’s when Lincecum entered the game to face senior Travis Vetters. Vetters struck out swinging, but the ball got away from UW catcher Joey Dunn, allowing Meier to score. Lincecum struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
Portland totaled six hits for the game, while the Huskies had 10. Peters was the only Pilot to have more than one hit.
The Pilots next host West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary’s for a three-game series at Joe Etzel Field this weekend. The Pilots and Gaels are scheduled to play at 3 p.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
