Sophomore Matt Jacobsen ties for ninth individually and earns honorable mention All-WCC honors

COPPEROPOLIS, Calif. -- University of Portland sophomore Matt Jacobsen earned a top 10 finish and honorable mention All-West Coast Conference honors after leading the Pilots to a sixth-place showing at the 2006 WCC Men’s Golf Championships held at Saddle Creek Golf Course. Jacobsen entered the final round in sole possession of second place, but slipped down the leaderboard with a final round 78.

Loyola Marymount (872) claimed the team championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Regional. San Francisco (877), Santa Clara (886), Saint Mary’s (892) and Pepperdine (899) rounded out the top five. Portland shot a team score of 907, the lowest 54-hole score of the year for the Pilots, to finish ahead of San Diego (922) and Gonzaga (928).

LMU’s Brian Locke ran away with individual medalist honors with a final round 64 (-8) and finished at 6-under par 210 for the tournament. San Francisco’s Ryan Gonzalez was the only other under-par performer and finished at 3-under par 213.

Portland entered the final round in fourth place before being passed by Pepperdine, the highest rated team in the conference, and Saint Mary’s.

The competitive golfing season is complete for the Pilots, but the University of Portland will host the 2006 NCAA Division-I Men’s Golf Championships at Crosswater in Sunriver, Ore. on May 31-June 3. For information about the championship, click here.
