Senior Matthew Peters goes 3-for-7 with two home runs and six RBI’s
CORVALLIS, Ore. --- It took 12 innings and more than five hours to finish, but the Portland Pilots finally beat the fifth-ranked Oregon State Beavers 20-13 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday at Goss Stadium. The Pilots had 22 hits for the game, led by freshman Sean Nicol and sophomore Danny Meier with four each.
Senior Matthew Peters, who extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games, had a pair of two-run home runs for the Pilots, who improve to 13-27 overall (2-10 WCC). Peters also knocked in six runs.
Nicol chipped in with three RBI’s and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Meier scored four runs, while junior Andrew Wrisley and freshman Paul Crowder each has three hits. Seven Pilots had at least one RBI.
Tied 13-13 in the 12th, junior Justin Ehlers led off with a double against OSU reliever Eddie Kunz (3-1). After junior Jesse Rodgers walked, Andrew Wrisley hit a tie-breaking single to center field. The Pilots then scored six more runs on a Crowder single, a two-run Nicol triple, a double by senior Gustaf Little, a Meier single and a sacrifice fly by Peters.
Down 12-11 in the top of the ninth inning, the Pilots were down to their final out. Meier drew a two-out walk to extend the inning. Peters followed with an RBI single to right field that scored Meier, who had advanced to second on a passed ball. Peters advanced to second on an error by the right fielder after his single. Senior Travis Vetters then gave Portland the lead with a base hit. Peters scored on an error by the third baseman, the sixth error in the game for Oregon State.
With one out and Portland closer Austin Dirkx on the hill in the bottom of the ninth, OSU’s Mitch Canham tied the game with a solo home run to right field.
Each team used seven pitchers for the game. Senior Joe Jones (1-2) pitched the final three innings to pick up the win for the Pilots. Jones didn’t allow a hit, while striking out one and walking three.
Kunz gave up four runs in 2.1 innings for the loss.
Oregon Stated (28-10, 9-3 Pac-10) scored first with three runs in the bottom of the first inning off UP starter Ari Ronick. Cole Gillespie and Shae McFeely each recorded RBI’s as OSU led 3-0.
Still down three runs in the top of the third, Portland put five runs on the board to take the lead. With the bases loaded, Vetters knocked in two with a single. Junior James Allan then picked up an RBI on a ground out, before Vetters scored on wild pitch. Paul Crowder capped the scoring with an RBI single that plated Jesse Rodgers and gave Portland a 5-3 lead.
The Beavs responded with four in the bottom of the fourth on only two hits. OSU was aided with three walks and a Portland error.
Down 7-5, the Pilots scored a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to take the lead back at 11-7. With the Beavers leading 7-6 in the sixth, Peters hit his first home run to make it a 8-7 Portland lead. Peters’ shot was a two-run blast to right field. Nicol, who knocked in Portland’s run in the fifth, also brought home a run in the sixth.
In the seventh, Peters hit another two-run home run, this time to center field.
Oregon State then plated three in the seventh and two in the eighth. McFeely tied the game with an RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning. Bill Rowe then gave the lead back to the Beavers with a sacrifice fly that scored Cole Gillespie.
The Beavers committed nine errors in the game. The Pilots had four.
The Pilots next travel to Malibu, Calif., for a three-game WCC series against Pepperdine this weekend. The Pilots are scheduled to play the Waves at 3 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, with the series finale slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
