Joel Sobotka, former Portland State University head coach, returns to the Rose City with the Pilots
PORTLAND, Ore. -- First-year University of Portland head coach Eric Reveno completed his coaching staff on Thursday by naming Joel Sobotka, Eric Jackson and Michael Wolf assistant coaches.
"Joel, Eric and Michael understand what it takes to build a champion in terms of technical expertise, team building and work ethic," Reveno said. "In addition to having a broad range of skills and experiences, they are teachers of character who will be excellent representatives of the University of Portland."
Joel Sobotka returns to the city of Portland after a three-year stint at Cal State Northridge as an assistant coach. Sobotka helped guide the Matadors to the Big West Conference Tournament finals in 2003-04 and the conference tournament semifinals in 2004-05 with an 18-13 overall record.
Sobotka was the head coach at Portland State University for four years (1998-02) prior to his position at Northridge. Hired by the Vikings at the age of 28, Sobotka was the youngest Division I head coach in NCAA history before 27-year-old Jeff Capel took the reins at Virginia Commonwealth in 2002. He posted a 53-59 overall record and led the Vikings to the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference Tournament in 1998. Sobotka served as an assistant coach at PSU under Ritchie McKay from 1996-98, when the Vikings reinstated hoops after a 15-year layoff.
Between his years at PSU and Cal State Northridge, Sobotka spent four months as an assistant general manager with the Harlem Globetrotters. He served as a graduate assistant at Arizona State during the 1995-96 season. A 1993 graduate of ASU, Sobotka began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Eastern Oregon (1993-95).
"Joel’s coaching experience combined with his appreciation and close familiarity with the city of Portland and the basketball community will make him a tremendous asset to our staff," Reveno said. "He will have a positive impact on every aspect of our program. Joel is a pleasure to work with and I could not be more excited to have him join our basketball family."
Eric Jackson spent the 2005-06 season as director of basketball operations and strength and conditioning coordinator at the University of Wyoming. Jackson was at Indiana University during the 2004-05 season serving as an administrative assistant and strength and conditioning coordinator for the Hoosiers.
He was an assistant coach at the University of Utah from 2002-04 and was instrumental in all facets of the program, including recruiting, academic counseling, practice preparation, as well as directing the Rick Majerus Summer Basketball Camps. Prior to his position as a full-time assistant, Jackson was the video coordinator at Utah and assisted with scouting opponents.
Jackson began his coaching career as an assistant at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wis., (1996-00). He was a standout player at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay under head coach Dick Bennett. Jackson was a team captain, led the team in assists two years and was twice an All-Defensive Team honoree.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing from UW-Green Bay in 2000.
"Eric comes highly recommended from some of the best coaches in the business," Reveno said. "Ever since playing for Coach Dick Bennett in college, Eric has gone from one great learning opportunity to another. I had the opportunity of getting to know him during his time at Utah and he has always impressed me with his understanding, preparedness and enthusiasm."
Michael Wolf joins the Portland staff after spending the last two years as head coach of Academy Charter High School in Lake Como, N.J. Wolf has also been the director of The Hoop Group since 2003, organizing and coordinating numerous high-profile basketball camps including the Pocono Invitational Basketball Camp in Stroudsburg, Pa.
Wolf was a graduate assistant at Stanford from 1997 to 1998, assisting the Cardinal in their run to the Final Four in ‘98 alongside Reveno. He served as associate head coach at Delaware Valley College (Doylestown, Pa.) in 1998-99. Wolf had two stints as an assistant coach at Harvard-Westlake School (North Hollywood, Calif.) from 1994 to 1997 and 1999 to 2002. During his tenure, Harvard-Westlake won five sectional championships, two state championships (1996, 1997) and was ranked as high as No. 4 nationally in 1997.
Wolf played four years at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. and earned his bachelor’s degree in English and education in 1994. He completed his master’s in educational psychology from Stanford in 1998.
"As a graduate assistant at Stanford, Michael made it clear to everyone that he had a bright future in college basketball," Reveno said. "Since that time, his experiences in grass roots basketball both in Los Angles and across the country have only increased his value as a college assistant. We will take full advantage of his tremendous organizational skills, but will benefit also from his strategic input and on-court teaching."
