Senior first baseman Matthew Peters belts his fifth homer of the season in the loss
MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 28 Pepperdine Waves cruised to a 10-2 victory over the Portland Pilots Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference baseball game at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves collected 15 hits, only three of the extra-base variety, but stole five bases in the game. Portland managed 12 hits, but hit into a pair of double plays and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The Pilots (13-29, 2-12 WCC) took a brief lead in the top of the third inning as sophomore left fielder Cory Wiltshire plated freshman catcher Paul Crowder with an RBI triple.
The Waves (29-16, 9-5 WCC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a two-out rally. David Uribes’ infield single started the run. After a stolen base and wild pitch, Uribes scored on Adrian Ortiz’s single. Ortiz also stole second and scored on a double by Chad Tracy. Nick Kliebert’s single up the middle drove in the third and final run.
Pepperdine pushed the lead to 7-1 with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings, chasing UP starter Sean Sargent (3-9). The sophomore right hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.
Portland senior Matthew Peters hit a solo blast in the seventh inning to make it 7-2, but the Waves countered with a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Pepperdine starter Barry Enright (9-1) gave up two runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings, while striking out two. Brian Ozols tossed the final two frames, scattering four hits and recording a pair of strikeouts.
Senior right fielder Travis Vetters went 3-for-4, raising his batting average to .350 in WCC games for the Pilots. Crowder was the only other Pilot with multiple hits, finishing the day 2-for-3.
Ortiz and Kliebert each had three hits for the Waves, while four other Pepperdine players had two hits.
Peters, who had a career-best 12-game hitting streak snapped in Friday’s loss to the Waves, leads the Pilots with five home runs, a .356 batting average and 36 RBIs on the season.
The Pilots and Waves conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
