UP seniors Nik Kosach, Matthew Peters and Travis Vetters go a combined 9-for-12 with two home runs and six RBI’s in their last collegiate game
PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Loyola Marymount Lions topped the Portland Pilots 13-9 in the season finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Lions opened a 13-4 lead after six innings en route to the win.
In their last collegiate game, Portland seniors Nik Kosach, Matthew Peters and Travis Vetters combined for nine hits, two home runs, seven runs and six RBI’s. On the mound, senior Joe Jones struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief. Those four players, along with senior pitcher Stephen Ball and senior infielder Gustaf Little, were honored in a ceremony before the game.
The Pilots finish the season at 15-37 overall and 3-18 in the conference. LMU finishes with a 24-32 record and an 11-10 conference mark.
Portland starter Austin Dirkx (1-5), a junior, is saddled with the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, on three hits in 2.2 innings. The Pilots used five pitchers in the game.
LMU starter Andy Beal (5-8) picks up the win. Beal gave up four runs on six hits in 5.0 innings. The Lions used four pitchers total.
Peters finished 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and two runs. He homered to straight-away center field in his last collegiate at-bat in the ninth inning. Vetters, who singled in his last at-bat in the ninth and scored on a sacrifice fly, went 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs and two RBI’s. Kosach, who also singled in his last at-bat in the ninth, tallied three hits in four at-bats, knocked in two and scored once.
The Lions opened the scoring with two runs on no hits in the top of the first. Dirkx plunked two of the first three hitters, Eric Farris and Chris Pettit, who then reached third and second, respectively, on a double steal. With one out, Farris scored and Pettit moved to third on a wild pitch. Erik Johnson then gave the Lions a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Pilots answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Peters followed a walk to sophomore Cory Wiltshire and a double by sophomore Danny Meier with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Wiltshire. Vetters then tied it at 2-2 with a single up the middle.
The Lions would go on to score two runs in the second, two more in the third, five in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Portland plated two in the fourth inning. Vetters led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to left field. With one out and the bases loaded, freshman Sean Nicol brought home Kosach with a sacrifice fly to center.
Trailing 13-4, the Pilots scored three in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Kosach knocked in two with a single to center field. Freshman Chase Powell then knocked in a run with a single to right.
Portland added two more runs in the ninth.
Both teams finished with 15 hits. UP junior Jesse Rodgers went 2-for-3 with an RBI. LMU’s Brian Wilson finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and Kyle Mura went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI’s.
