Sophomore Danny Meier’s second home run in two days gives Portland a 7-6 win over the Huskies
SEATTLE, Wash. --- Sophomore Danny Meier hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning as the Portland Pilots defeated the Washington Huskies 7-6 in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. It’s Meier’s second home run in two days.
The Pilots entered the eighth inning trailing 6-4. Freshman Sean Nicol led off with a single and sophomore Cory Wiltshire followed with a double. Meier then followed with his team-leading eighth home run that sailed over the left field wall. Meier’s solo home run on Monday was Portland’s lone run in an 8-1 loss to the Huskies.
Senior Matthew Peters also knocked in three runs for the Pilots, who improve to 14-31 this season. Nicol, Wiltshire and Meier each had a pair of hits for the game. Junior Justin Ehlers knocked in Portland’s other run.
Senior Joe Jones (2-2) pitched four scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. He allowed only one hit.
Husky reliever Bryce Mooney (3-3), who came on to begin the eighth, suffered the loss, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings.
The Pilots opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run homer by Peters off of UW starter Brandon McKerney. Peters’ sixth blast of the season came with two outs and Meier on first. Meier had kept the inning going with a two-out single to center.
Washington (32-20) responded with a two-run shot of its own in the bottom of the first off of UP starter Peter Beringhaus. Zach Clem, who has hit five home runs against the Pilots this season, tied the score with a blast to left-center field.
The Husky lead was short-lived as the Pilots scored again in the top of the second. With one out and runners on second and third, Ehlers knocked in senior Nik Kosach with an RBI ground out to the pitcher, making it a 3-2 Portland lead.
UW added three more in the third to re-claim the lead. The Huskies loaded the bases with no outs, before junior Josh Roberts relieved Beringhaus. The Huskies then plated three on a ground out, a passed ball and an RBI single by Cory Rickard. Then with one on and one out, Roberts ended the threat with a strike out and a ground out.
The Pilots made it a 5-4 Husky lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Wiltshire worked his way to third after a lead-off single off of UW reliever Nick Haughian. Peters then knocked in his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Washington tallied its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Andy Lentz hit an RBI single off of Roberts, before he was relieved by Jones with no outs.
The Pilots next travel to Santa Clara for a three-game West Coast Conference series against the Broncos this weekend. The Pilots and Broncos are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. on Friday and at 1 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Portland then returns home to end the season with a four-game homestand.
