The Portland Pilots make it ten straight over Oregon State with a win in Corvallis
CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Junior forward Natalie Budge scored in the first half and the Portland Pilots added two late goals to defeat the Oregon State Beavers 3-0 in a non-conference women’s soccer match Saturday night at Lorenz Field. It’s the tenth straight win over the Beavers for the sixth-ranked Pilots, who improve to 4-2-1 on the season.
Oregon State is also 4-2-1.
Portland senior goalkeeper Cori Alexander made three saves for her 33rd career shutout. The Pilots held the Beavs to just six shots in the contest and only one in the second half. Portland attempted 21 shots, with 12 coming after the break.
"Tonight was a great win for the Pilots," head coach Garrett Smith said. "Oregon State held back and looked for a counter all game, but our back line held tough all night long. It was just a great performance for our back four."
Budge netted her fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute. In traffic, she ripped a shot in from 15 yards out that grazed the cross bar on its way into the corner of the net. Junior defender Rachel Rapinoe was credited with the assist.
The score remained 1-nil until the final two minutes of the game when the Pilots put two more on the board. Junior midfielder Michele Scifo score her first goal of the season in the 89th minute. She one-timed a pass from junior defender Stephanie Lopez in from 18 yards out. It’s the first assist this season for Lopez.
Sophomore Megan Rapinoe then capped the scoring for Portland with her ninth goal this season. She scored on a penalty kick in the final minute of the game. Rapinoe and Lopez are fresh off an appearance with the U.S. Women’s National team, who defeated Mexico 3-1 on Wednesday.
"It’s great to see us spread the scoring around," Smith said.
Portland next hosts crosstown rival Portland State on Sunday. The Pilots and Vikings are scheduled to play at 2:00 p.m. at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
