The Huskies score on a penalty kick to defeat Portland 1-0
SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Northern Illinois Huskies scored on a penalty kick in the 10th minute to defeat the Portland Pilots 1-0 in a non-conference men’s soccer match at the Husky Fever Classic in Seattle, Wash. on Sunday. It’s the first loss this season for the Pilots, who drop to 2-1-2.
The Pilots outshot the Huskies 14-10 and had seven corner kicks to Northern Illinois’ two. The match featured seven yellow cards, with Portland receiving four and NIU (5-3-0) two. Each team was whistled for three offsides calls.
UP senior keeper Luis Robles was solid in the net with three saves, giving him 275 career saves. Robles is now third all-time in the Portland record books for saves.
Northern Illinois goalie Joe Zimka had five saves for the Huskies.
Senior Christopher Sanders and sophomore Alex Elliott led the Portland attack, as the forwards each took three shots for the game.
Northern Illinois scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick in the 10th minute. Marcus McCarty was awarded the PK after Portland freshman defender Logan Emory was called for a foul in the box. It’s McCarty’s team-leading fourth goal this season.
The Pilots had a great opportunity in the second half when they ripped two shots within a matter of seconds. Both shots from sophomore midfielder Brayton Knapp and freshman midfielder Collen Warner were blocked by Husky defenders.
The Pilots next travel to California for their first two conference games of the season. The Pilots face the San Diego Toreros at 7:00 p.m. Friday night in San Diego. Portland then takes on Loyola Marymount at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in Los Angeles.
