Senior Jake Easterly shot a second-round 67 and finished with a 218 at the Purple and Red Invitational
LAYTON, Utah --- Portland senior Jake Easterly shot a second-round 67 and placed 23rd to help the Pilots finish eighth at the Purple and Red Invitational at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah on Tuesday. Easterly totaled a two-over par 219, one stroke better than freshman teammate Thomas Robertson, at the season-opening tournament for the Pilots. Portland as a team finished with a three-round total of 880 (290-291-299).
Hartford took home the team title after defeating tournament co-host Utah in a playoff. Both the Hawks and Utes finished with an 863. San Francisco began the day as the team leader, but faltered with a third-round 302. The Dons (870) finished fifth, just behind Cal Poly (864) and Northern Colorado (867).
Cal Poly’s Dave Lewinski finished at eight-under par to earn medalist honors by one stroke over Utah’s Dustin Pimm. Lewinski fired a final-round 68, while Pimm closed with a 70.
Easterly sandwiched his four-under 67 with rounds of 75 and 76. Robertson, who tied for 31st place, opened with a two-under 70, before coming in with a 75 and 74. Junior Joel Johnson also opened with a 70 and finished in a tie for 33rd place with a 222. Senior Kevin Beavers tied for 44th with a 223 and junior Zach Thompson placed 66th (229).
Portland next takes the course at the Vandal Fall Classic in Moscow, Idaho on Sept. 25-26.
