Sophomore forward Alex Elliott scores two first-half goals in Portland’s 3-0 win
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland sophomore forward Alex Elliott scored twice and senior keeper Luis Robles made nine saves as the Pilots shutout the Seattle Redhawks 3-0 in a non-conference men’s soccer match Friday afternoon at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The win is the second straight shutout for the Pilots (4-2-2, 1-1-0 West Coast Conference) and the fifth this season.
It was an active night for Robles (pictured) as he recorded his fourth shutout this season and 21st of his career. He is now one shutout away from tying Joe Garaventa (1977, 79-81) for third on UP’s all-time career shutout list.
The two tallies give Elliott a team-high five goals this season, matching his season total from last year.
Seattle, an NCAA Division II school, drops to 8-3 this fall.
Elliott’s first score came in the fifth minute off a long pass from junior defender Jeff Griffin. Griffin sent a beautiful ball towards Elliott, causing Seattle goal keeper Chris Sorenson to come off his line for a one-v-one opportunity. Elliott beat Sorenson to the ball, then easily scored on the empty net. Griffin was credited with the assist, his first this season.
Elliott made it 2-nil Pilots 15 minutes later off a another long pass, this time courtesy junior midfielder Matthew Dallman. From the right wing at midfield, Dallman found Elliott in the middle of the field, just outside of the box. Elliott took a touch before chipping it over a diving Sorenson and into the net from 15 yards out. Dallman now has two assists this fall.
Seattle’s best chance in the first half came with 2:30 showing on the clock. A nifty pass found Andrew Kreiter alone in the box. Robles was able to dive and deflect the shot off of Kreiter’s foot. Portland outshot the Redhawks 9-4 in the first period.
The Redhawks had a great opportunity about five minutes into the second half. Off a nice cross by Kreiter, Mutanda Kwesele tried to one touch it into the net just in front of the goal, but Robles was there for an acrobatic save.
The third Portland goal came on a Seattle own-goal in the 65th minute. Sophomore midfielder Leland Wright made a run down the right sideline. He then sent a cross in from the right wing, just in front of the goal mouth. A Seattle defender dove trying to deflect the ball out of bounds, but found the back of the net instead to make it 3-0.
The Redhawks looked to get on the board when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Seattle was granted the PK after the official ruled UP junior defender Eric Fredback had taken down an SU player in the box. Jason Cascio’s attempt was wide right
For the game, Portland outshot the Redhawks 15-11. The Pilots had six corner kicks, while Seattle was awarded five.
The Pilots next return to conference play with a trip to San Francisco, Calif. Portland is slated to play the San Francisco Dons on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Portland then returns home for a three-game conference homestand, beginning with Saint Mary’s on Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
