PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Oregon cross country teams swept the men’s and women’s team and individual races at the Pier Park Preview, hosted by the University of Portland at Pier Park.

“We held out our top seven runners so I was very pleased with the team results,” said Portland head coach Rob Conner. “I wanted our guys to run even and not press too much. It is early and we have only done two workouts. Our first three runners are only sophomores so I was very happy with the maturity they showed. They held back and ran a smart race.”

 The Oregon men’s ‘B’ team narrowly won the team race over the Portland ‘B’ squad, 26-29, and beat Portland State, 15-50, in the dual-scored competitions. Portland’s ‘B’ team beat PSU, 15-50.

The UO women’s ‘B’ team beat the Portland ‘C’ team, 15-50, and Portland State, 18-41, while Portland State won their women’s match-up with Portland, 19-38.

On the women’s side, UO freshman Keara Sammons won the 5,000-meter race by seven seconds (17:49.25) over sophomore teammate Zoe Nelson (second, 17:56.57) and Portland’s Sarah Zerzan (third, 18:24.28).

In his debut for the Duck men, redshirt sophomore transfer Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott won the four-mile men’s race by four seconds (19:46.86) over Portland’s Colin Longmuir (second, 19:50.65) and Justin Houck (third, 19:55.75).

The Portland cross country teams next travel to Seattle, Wash. for the Sundoger Invitational on September 16.
