Sophomore forward Jamie Jones scores 12 points and grabs nine rebounds in the loss
SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots were held to just 14 second-half points in a 57-41 loss to the Santa Clara Broncos Monday night at the Leavey Center. It was the lowest point total for the Pilots (6-14, 2-2 West Coast Conference) on the season, while the Broncos (12-6, 2-1) improve to 9-3 at home.
Portland remains winless away from home, falling to 0-9 on the road.
After grabbing a seven point lead midway through the first half, the Pilots scored just four points in the last 9:28 in the half, yet managed a 27-27 tie going into the break.
The scoring struggles continued to begin the second half as the Pilots went ice cold from the field. The Pilots scored just six points in the first 15:58 of the second period as the Broncos ran to a 53-33 lead. SCU’s first lead of the game came at 32-29 on a three-pointer by Scott Dougherty early in the half. The Broncos continued to pour it on, while the Pilots made just 4-of-24 shots after intermission.
Sophomore center John Bryant led all scorers with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Broncos. Dougherty added 12 points, while Mitch Henke had 10, all in the first half.
Senior center Chris Jackson continued his solid play of late off the bench, finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Santa Clara shot 44.2 percent from the field, while the Pilots finished at 33.3 percent. The Broncos gained a slight 32-31 edge on the boards, but owned a 32-20 margin for points in the paint. Portland committed 14 turnovers, while the Broncos had just nine.
Portland will return to the Rose City for its next three games, beginning with a much-anticipated matchup with Northwest rival Gonzaga on Monday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN. The Pilots will host San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. on ESPNU, and then welcome San Francisco on Monday Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
