SIMI VALLEY, Calif. --- Four Pilots placed in the top-20 individually as Portland finished second overall at the Bill Cullum Invitational, which concluded at the Wood Ranch Golf Club on Tuesday. The Pilots totaled an 881, while tournament winner UC Santa Barbara shot an 870.

The Pilots finished just ahead of conference foe Loyola Marymount (886) at the 15-team tournament. Southern Utah was fourth with an 887, while Gonzaga placed fifth with an 891.

UCSB’s Brian Hollenbeck claimed medalist honors with a four-under par 212. Teammate Michael Casca and Southern Utah’s Eric Nilsson finished a stroke back in second place.

Sophomore Terence Macatangay, who placed eighth overall, was Portland’s top finisher. After shooting a two-under 70 during Monday’s second round, Macatangay shot a final-round 72 to finish with a one-over par 217 at the 54-hole tourney. He opened with a 75.

UP freshmen Justin Smithhisler and Jake Wagner tied for 16th place. Smithhisler (73-72-78) and Wagner (75-72-76) both finished with a seven-over 223. It’s the third top-20 finish for Smithhisler this fall and the second for Wagner.

Sophomore Thomas Robertson posted his first top-20 finish of the season after tying for 20th with a 224 (77-76-70). Robertson shot a team-low 70 during the final round. Senior Joel Johnson tied for 46th with a 228 (80-75-73).

Portland next takes the course at the Santa Clara Invitational next week. The two-day tourney opens on Oct. 22 at the Silver Creek Country Club in San Jose, Calif.
