PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland State Vikings held off the Portland Pilots 80-71 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at the Chiles Center. Senior Rachel Warren and sophomore Kendra Morris each scored 20 points for the Pilots.
Portland (3-2) freshman Tara Cronin continued her solid play to begin her collegiate career with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in 16 minutes.
Portland State’s (3-0) Claire Faucher handed out 16 assists to set a new Chiles Center individual record. The old record of 15 was set by Santa Clara’s Jennifer Lucas in 1988.
Delaney Conway scored a game-high 28 points for the Vikings, while Kelsey Kahle posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vikings came out firing en route to an early 11-4 lead, with Conway scoring nine. The Pilots closed the gap to 15-10, but that’s as close as they would get the rest of the way. Conway scored 17 points in the first half as PSU entered the locker room with a 41-23 lead.
Portland State continued its torrid shooting in the second half as the lead grew to 25 at 61-36 with 13 minutes left in the game. The Vikings’ lead was still 24 when the Pilots closed the game on a 18-6 run covering the final five minutes.
The Vikings finished 33-for-68 (48.5 percent) from the field, 3-for-12 (25 percent) on three-pointers and 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) from the line.
The Pilots hit 24 of 71 (33.8 percent) field goals, hit five of 21 (23.8 percent) from behind the three-point arc and went 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) from the line.
Warren was Portland’s top rebounder with eight boards. PSU finished with a 47-40 edge in rebounds. Portland converted 21 Portland State turnovers into 25 points, while the Vikings countered with 26 points off 19 UP turnovers.
The Pilots next take the court on Sunday with a home game against Cal State Northridge at 2:00 p.m. at the Chiles Center.
