LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots volleyball team dropped a WCC match to Loyola Marymount 0-3 Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion. The Pilots fell 12-30, 20-30, and 22-30. Portland is now 7-18 and 0-11 in the WCC. The Pilots were led by freshman Jessica Clemens (pictured right) who had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Loyola Marymount was led by Christianna Reneau who finished with a match-high 13 kills. LMU had 51 kills and hit .333 while the Pilots struggled offensively hitting just .071 with a total of 31 kills for the match.
Loyola Marymount led game one going up 12-4. The Pilots were searching for their offensive rhythm as sophomore Maria Clemens was the only Pilot with a kill at that point in the game. A kill by senior Kelly Whitehouse cut the LMU lead to six points as UP trailed 6-12. LMU extended its lead to 19-8 on a kill by Emily Day. The Lions continued on the attack going up 25-10 on a kill by Heather Hughes. The Lions would win the game 30-12. LMU had 19 total kills in the game.
The Lions again jumped out to an early lead in game two as they led 6-2. A kill by Whitehouse brought the Pilots to within three points 3-6. The Lions went on a 5-2 run going up 11-5, Portland did get back-to-back points on a kill by Jessica Clemens and a block by Senior Kara Pein. A kill by Hughes pushed the LMU lead to nine points 18-9. A kill by Maria Clemens followed by a block by junior Ashley Grayson cut the LMU lead to seven points 11-18. Portland got within in six points on a block by Grayson and Pein as LMU led 20-14. The Lions answered with a kill by Jania Motton pushing the lead back to 10 points, 24-14. LMU would win the game 30-19. Jessica Clemens led Portland with five kills through two games.
A kill by Grayson tied game three at 2-2. Portland would take the lead 4-3 on a kill by Jessica Clemens. The game was tied at 5-5. A kill by senior Nicole Thometz would keep the game tied at 6-6. The game would go back and forth, a kill by Jessica Clemens would again tie the game at 11-11. LMU would go up by two points 17-15 on a kill by Reneau. A kill by Thometz would keep Portland close as UP trailed 19-22. LMU would go on a 8-3 run to win the game 30-22.
