Michelle Enyeart and Angie Woznuk tally goals for the
Pilots
MALIBU, Calif. --- The
No. 3 Portland Pilots recorded their fifth consecutive shutout and
defeated the Pepperdine Waves 2-0 on Sunday at Tari Frahm Rokus
Field. The win was Portland’s seventh straight and clinched the team’s ninth
West Coast Conference title and an automatic berth in the 2007 NCAA
playoffs.
Portland (14-3-0, 6-0-0 WCC) got an early goal
from sophomore forward Michelle Enyeart and a late strike from senior
midfielder Angie Woznuk.
The Pilots outshot the Waves (5-7-6,
2-3-1 WCC) 12-3 for the match. Portland has now outscored WCC
opponents 18-1, with the lone goal allowed coming in the conference
opener to Gonzaga. During their seven-game winning streak, the Pilots
have outscored the opposition 22-1.
“It was a workmanlike performance
today,” Portland coach Garrett Smith said. “We came down here looking for a
shutout and we got it. We got a good goal early and an insurance strike
on a set piece late.”
Enyeart put the Pilots on top just 2:03 into play with her
seventh goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Keelin Winters won a
goal kick in the air and sent it forward to freshman Sophie Schmidt.
Schmidt played a through ball to Enyeart, who outran the Pepperdine
defense and calmly finished.
Woznuk iced the match in the 86th
minute on a corner kick for the Pilots. Senior defender Stephanie
Lopez lofted in the service and Winters again kept the ball alive. It
bounced to Woznuk who tapped it inside the right post for the 2-0 lead.
Woznuk now has seven goals and seven assists on the
season.
Winters doubled her season assist total with two in
Sunday’s match.
Portland sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Davis
made two saves in recording her seventh shutout of the season.
Davis
extended her shutout streak to 405 minutes.
“It’s always nice to win
your league title,” Smith added. “Especially in a very tough and
competitive conference like the WCC.”
With the title in hand, Portland will
look to record its fourth all-time undefeated and untied WCC season in
their regular season finale against Loyola Marymount next weekend.
The Pilots also posted perfect league records in 1992, 1994 and 1996.
Portland’s final regular season match will be
on Saturday, Nov. 10 against Loyola Marymount at Merlo Field at the
Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will
be preceded by the Pilots recognizing the 2007 senior class.
