PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 75 University of Portland men’s tennis team improved to 5-3 on the year after topping Whitman 5-2 and Linfield 7-0 on Saturday in double-header at the Louisiana Pacific tennis center.
Whitman of Walla Walla, Wash., the No. 16 ranked team in Division III, provided a good test for Portland, taking two singles matches and offering stiff competition in doubles. But the deeper Pilots prevailed, sweeping all three doubles matches with 8-6 scores and picking up straight-set singles wins from Colby Jager (pictured), Joel Kincaid, Charlie Yemm and Evan Schleining. The Missionaries fell to 4-2 on the year.
Phalkun Mam, the No. 5 ranked player in D-III, bested Portland’s Alex Strom in a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 battle at the No. 1 position. Complete results can be found by scrolling to the end of the release.
Linfield proved to be an easier foe than Whitman as the Pilots cruised to a 7-0 sweep without losing a single set. The Wildcats, a D-III team from McMinnville, Ore., fell to 0-4 on the year.
The Pilots once again swept the early matches to claim the doubles point. Filip Zivkovic then earned the win at the No. 1 position in his only singles match of the day as Jager, Kincaid, Yemm and Schleining all picked up their second wins of the day. Strom bounced back from his earlier loss to dominate Ian McGrath 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
Next up for Portland is a trip to California next weekend where they will face West Coast Conference opponents No. 73 Santa Clara and Saint Mary’s and play a non-conference match against UC-Davis.
