Evan Schleining won in both singles and doubles for the second straight day
DAVIS, Calif. --- The University of Portland men’s tennis team won for the second time in as many days with a 6-1 victory over UC Davis Sunday afternoon. The Pilots improve to 7-4 on the season, while the Aggies drop to 2-10.
The Pilots, playing their third match of the weekend, withstood a good effort from UC Davis to claim the win. Portland dropped its match on Friday at No. 64 Santa Clara, but responded with wins at No. 72 Saint Mary’s and most recently against the Aggies.
"We have not had a chance to get outside yet in Portland so our first day or two was really an adjustment,” Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. “Santa Clara took it to us during that adjustment period. We had a great win against Saint Mary's. Joel Kincaid won the biggest match for UP in the last couple of years, winning a third set tie-breaker to decide the match.
"Coming back against UC Davis on Sunday was tough because of the emotionally and physically exhausting match against Saint Mary's, but our guys really responded. We played great doubles. And all of our guys gutted out wins, except Kincaid who had match point before falling."
After Portland swept the doubles point in convincing fashion, four of the six singles contests went three sets. Freshman Filip Zivkovic and senior Alex Strom both came back from first set losses to earn wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kincaid fell at No. 3 to Michael Reiser, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8).
The bottom of the Pilots’ lineup held court as senior Colby Jager and junior Charlie Yemm earned straight-set wins, while freshman Evan Schleining held Kevin Liang to love in the third set.
"Besides Kincaid's big win against Saint Mary's, Alex Strom and Evan Schleining were standouts. Our doubles performance was excellent all weekend, and our guys competed unbelievably well on some tough road courts, outdoors.”
The Pilots, hoping to return to the national rankings with an impressive last weekend, will take a well-deserved rest before returning to the Pacific Northwest for their final home match of the season. Portland will host Eastern Washington on Saturday, March 17.
