Senior Jake Easterly ties for sixth place individually
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Jake Easterly finished eight strokes off the pace to tie for sixth place as the Pilots tied for fourth as a team at the Braveheart Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at the Oak Valley Country Club. Easterly fired a three-round total of 228 on the par-72 course.
Portland was tied for fourth in the 17-team field after a first-round 314 before climbing to third after totaling a 296 during the second round. The Pilots, who entered the final round just five strokes behind tournament leader UCLA, closed with a 316 to finish with a 926.
Jacksonville took the team title after firing a final-round 289. The Osprey totaled an 896 to finish just ahead UCLA (905), which slipped to second after finishing with a 300. Utah (924) placed third, while Southern Utah matched Portland with a 926.
Jacksonville claimed the top three individual spots as well, led by Matt Kleinrock’s first-place finish. Kleinrock totaled a four over par 220 to finish just ahead of teammates Russel Knox (223) and Duncan Stewart (224).
After opening with a 79, Easterly closed with a 74 and a 75 on his way to a score of 10 over par. Freshman teammate Terence Macatangay, who tied for 24 the place with a 233, was Portland’s next top finisher.
UP senior Kevin Beavers (238) tied for 44th place, freshman Thomas Robertson (240) tied for 55th and junior Joel Johnson tied for 69th with a 243. Robertson had Portland’s low-round for the tournament with a 72 in the second round.
The Pilots next take the course at a tournament hosted by Cal Poly at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The two-day tourney begins on March 29.
