“That may have been the best 5000-meter race in school history,” head track and field and cross country coach Rob Conner said. “To have so many [personal records] is a testament to the hard work the guys have been putting in. Our training has been geared toward the 10,000 so running that fast off strength work is pretty amazing.”
One of nine NCAA-designated "last chance" meets held throughout the country this weekend, Saturday's meet provided the nation's best athletes one final opportunity to improve their marks in advance of next weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Kinsella’s time of 14:02.10 placed him third all-time in school history in the 5000, while Sheeks’ 14:06.02 placed him fifth and McKenzie’s 14:08.34 put him at seventh. All three runners joined an elite group of 40 runners nationally to provisionally qualify for the NCAA indoor championships.
Junior Michael Kilburg ran a 14:11.75, just shy of his personal record of 14:09.05, and sophomore Colin Longmuir set a new personal record with a 14:21.94. Longmuir’s mark placed him 11th all-time on the UP record books.
As a team, Portland placed five runners in the top ten finishers.
Justin Houck (14:37.65), Jordan Foster (15:05.32), Lars Wyatt (15:28.51), Michael Haugen (15:36.51) and Johnson Lee (16:04.85) also ran in the 5000.
