MISSOULA, Mont. --- The University of Portland men’s tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-2 victory over the Montana Grizzlies on Friday, raising its season record to 11-6. Montana falls to 7-8 on the year.
The Pilots started off the day taking two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, with all three matches decided by three games or less. The tight competition continued in singles play, with seniors Alex Strom (pictured) and Scott Kennel winning their matches in three sets. Kennel provided the most drama on the afternoon at the sixth position, winning his match over Montana’s Brady Tommerup with a 7-2 tiebreak win in the third set.
Senior Colby Jager was the only Pilot to win in straight sets, downing Raydner Ramos 6-4, 6-2 at the fourth position.
Junior Charlie Yemm, playing in the fifth position, won the first set 6-2 but couldn’t hold on, falling in three to Mikolai Borkowski. Freshman Filip Zivkovic, playing at number one, lost in straight sets to Stuart Wing.
In the third position match, sophomore Joel Kincaid and Felipe Raw were tied at one set apiece and were heading to a third set when Raw retired to give Kincaid the win.
The Pilots face Eastern Washington on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the team’s final dual match before playing in the West Coast Conference tournament on Friday, April 20 in San Diego.
