SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The University of Portland men's tennis team lost to the Saint Mary's Gaels in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships Friday morning. The Pilots will face Gonzaga in the consolation semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m.
"Saint Mary's played well today and we did not capitalize on a couple of key chances," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Plus, because of the rain down here we started with singles instead of the usual doubles first format. We work very hard at our doubles and have used winning that doubles point as a way to build momentum into the match. We didn't get that opportunity today, which I think really hurt us."
Senior Colby Jager earned Portland's lone victory, a 6-3, 6-2 win over Adam Fauvre at the No. 4 position.
