EUGENE, Ore. --- Portland juniors John Moore and Michael Kilburg (pictured) both ran personal bests and regionally qualified in the 5000 meters at the Oregon Invitational this weekend. Moore ran a 14:00.41 and Kilburg won his section with a time of 14:06.64. Both runners entered UP’s record books with the times – Moore’s 14:00.41 ties former Pilot great Pete Julian for fifth place overall and while Kilburg’s time checks in at No. 8 all-time.
According to head track and field coach Rob Conner, both Moore and Kilburg will be aiming to automatically qualify for the 10,000 meters at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. next weekend. Moore is the school record holder in the 10,000 with a time of 28:43.19 and earned All-American honors in the event in 2005 when he placed 10th at the NCAA Championship meet.
Additionally, the 5000 marks the second event in which Moore has regionally qualified – Moore ran a time of 9:06.12 in the 3000 meter steeplechase last weekend to qualify.
