LMU scores in the ninth to claim a 2-1 win over Portland
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- With the score tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of ninth inning, Loyola Marymount’s Marty Mullins hit a two-out, game-winning RBI single to left field lifting the Lions to a 2-1 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference baseball game on Sunday at Page Stadium.
LMU (22-32-1, 9-12 WCC) won two of three games against Portland (20-27, 7-11 WCC) to claim the weekend series.
Daniel Marcias (5-6) went the distance to pick up the win for LMU. In 9.0 innings, Marcias gave up one run on six hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
Senior Josh Roberts (3-2) took the loss for Portland. Roberts allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
The Pilots scored the game’s first run with a tally in the fifth inning. With runners on the corners and two outs, junior Brandon Howard plated senior Billy Krause with an RBI single up the middle.
The Lions answered with the tying run in the bottom half of the fifth. T.J. Bernardy tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out, run-scoring double to right field.
Portland starter Chris Siegfried held LMU to one run on six hits in 6.0 innings of work. He had five strikeouts and zero walks. Reliever Brian Yoakum recorded two outs in the seventh before giving way to Roberts with the bases loaded and two outs. Roberts struck out Michael Glomb to end the inning.
LMU outhit the Pilots 11-6.
With 518 career assists, the third baseman/shortstop Jesse Rodgers is now the all-time career assist leader at UP. He passed former career assist leader Les Dennis (1992-95) during the series.
Portland next closes the regular season with four straight home games. On Monday, the Pilots host the Washington State Cougars for a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m. at Joe Etzel Field. Portland then closes with a three-game conference set against Pepperdine at home next weekend.
