Director of Soccer Bill Irwin and three other Pilots help the U.S. bring back the championship
Portland Director of Soccer Bill Irwin guided the U.S. Under-21 National Team to the Nordic Cup championship with a 4-0 win over Germany on Tuesday in Finland. The win reasserted the USA’s stronghold on the Nordic Cup with their eighth title in the last nine years and ninth overall. Last year the USA was defeated by the Germans in the championship match.
Among Irwin’s 18-player roster included three University of Portland Pilots: senior midfielder Angie Woznuk, sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Davis and recently graduated goalkeeper Cori Alexander.
Alexander proved to be a wall in goal for the U.S., playing the entirety of all three matches and posting three shutouts. Woznuk also started all three matches and recorded a penalty kick goal in the championship.
The team posted preliminary 1-0 victories over Norway and Sweden to reach the title match.
