After playing 73 minutes of scoreless soccer, the floodgates opened as both teams poured it on and eventually headed to overtime tied at 2-2. Portland’s Ryan Luke had the first shot of the extra period, but his attempt was blocked two minutes in.
Saint Mary’s then countered the other way and got the game-winner from Justin Kim. Kim finished inside the right post from 25 yards out. Brian Siu assisted on the play.
SMC’s Yousef Samy began the scoring barrage with a goal in the 74th minute. Samy had possession in the box, made his way around two UP defenders and cracked a shot into the lower left corner to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead.
The Pilots wasted little time to respond as senior Bryan Irwin tallied the equalizer barely a minute later. Irwin corralled a deflected feed from junior Greg Rouse and buried a shot into the left corner of the net from inside the 18-yard box. The strike is Irwin’s fifth this fall. Rouse picks up his first career assist and first career point.
Three minutes later, Irwin set up teammate and fellow senior Leland Wright for a goal, giving the Pilots a 2-1 advantage. Irwin sent a perfectly place cross into the area from the right flank. Wright finished with his third goal of the season, while Irwin picked up his third assist.
The lead was short-lived as the Gaels tied the game once again with a goal three minutes after Portland’s. Kim finished with a header off a feed from Samy, tying the game at 2-2 and sending it to overtime.
The Gaels finished with a 20-10 advantage in overall shots and a slim 7-5 edge in shots on-goal. The Pilots had three corners kicks to SMC’s two.
