SANTA ANA, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots bounced back with a final round 293 on Tuesday to move up and finish in fourth place at the Anteater Invitational hosted by UC Irvine at Santa Ana Country Club. Portland was tied for fifth after 36 holes yesterday, but shot its lowest round of the tournament Tuesday to finish with a team score of 889 at the par 72, 6,542-yard layout.
Portland sophomore Terence Macatangay led the Pilots with a 4-over 220 to tie for 11th place overall. Sophomore Thomas Robertson (+7) and freshman Justin Smithhisler (+8) finished 17th and tied for 18th among the 10-team field.
Santa Clara won the team title with an 857, edging host UC Irvine (861) and Loyola Marymount (866). Scott Travers of Santa Clara won medalist honors with a birdie on the third playoff hole to defeat Brian Locke of Loyola Marymount. Locke shot a 4-under 68 in the final round as both players carded 54-hole totals of 8-under 208.
Portland will next participate in the Braveheart Classic on March 3-4 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.
