FRESNO, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots played their best golf of the spring by combining for a three-over par 867 at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at the Fort Washington Country Club. The Pilots tied for 10th place, but were only five strokes out of fifth place.
San Diego State bettered California and Texas by three strokes to claim the team title. The Aztecs finished with a minus-23 841. Oregon was fourth with a nine-under 855, while Pacific placed fifth with an 862.
Charlie Holland of Texas defeated San Diego State’s Matt Hoffenberg on the third hole of a playoff to take home medalist honors. Both Holland and Hoffenberg fired a nine-under par 207 for the tournament. Texas’ Lance Lopez was two strokes back in third, while Lopez’s teammate Bobby Hudson and Santa Clara’s Scott Travers tied for fourth with a 210 (-6).
The Pilots sandwiched a second-round 285 with a pair of 291’s at the 54-hole, 20-team tournament. Sophomore Terence Macatangay, who tied for 20th overall, was Portland’s top finisher with a two-under 214. Macatangay shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday after opening with a pair of 71’s on Monday.
Freshman Justin Smithhisler tied for 27th, finishing just a stroke back of Macatangay. Smithhisler had UP’s low round for the tourney, firing a second round 68 (-4). He finished at one-under par with a 215.
Portland sophomore Thomas Robertson tied for 57th with a four-over 220, while freshman Jake Wagner (221) was one back and tied for 61st. Senior Joel Johnson tied for 77th place with a nine-over par 225.
The Pilots next take two weeks off before returning to action at the Oregon Duck Invitational at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore. The two-day tourney begins on Monday, March 24.
