PORTLAND, Ore. --- In the first West Coast Conference meeting of the season, the Portland Pilots defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 5-2 on Saturday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. Portland has won four straight and improves to 10-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 6-11.
Sophomore Filip Zivkovic continued his remarkable spring with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Roman Dojcak at No. 2 singles. Zivkovic runs his record to 14-0 in dual action this year.
Junior Joel Kincaid edged Stefan Feddersen at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 7-5, while freshman Dillon Pottish improved to 12-3 in dual singles with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3.
Gonzaga bounced back with wins at No. 4 and No. 5, but senior Charlie Yemm provided Portland’s final point with a straight set win at No. 6.
Portland took two of three doubles matches to grab the early lead.
"Today was very up and down,” Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. “We played extremely shaky doubles and were very fortunate to get the point. Gonzaga played with a lot of energy. Though we are banged up physically we did suck it up and get through some tight singles matches. At this point we need a bit of time to get right physically, but I think we are making strides in what we are trying to do."
Rest will have to wait for the Pilots though, as the team is scheduled for a doubleheader on Sunday at Jesuit High School. The Pilots will face Portland State and Whitman.
