CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Joey Wong knocked in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the 13th inning to lead the Oregon State Beavers to a 5-4 win over the Portland Pilots in a non-conference baseball game Monday night at Goss Stadium. The loss drops Portland’s overall record to 14-14, while the Beavers improve to 14-8.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the 13th, OSU’s Josh Tommasini and Ryan Ortiz notched back-to-back singles off of UP reliever Matthew Lange (3-4) to lead off the inning. After Garrett Nash advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, Wong knocked in the winning run with his only hit in seven at-bats on the night.
Blake Keitzman (1-3), who retired the Pilots in order in the top of the 13 th, picks up the win for Oregon State, which used seven pitchers on the night.
Down 4-0 after four innings, Portland scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to even the score. In the fifth, freshman 2B Riley Henricks followed singles by sophomore C Rocky Gale and sophomore SS C.J. Cullen with an RBI double down the right field line. The two-bagger is the team-leading ninth double this season for Henricks.
With Henricks on second and Cullen on third, freshman 3B Kevin Armijo pulled the Pilots within two runs with a run-scoring ground out.
With the score 4-2 in the top of the sixth, junior 1B Chase Powell hit a one-out single to right-center field. Senior OF Danny Meier then doubled down the left field line, sending Powell to third. Then with freshman DH Owen Jones at the plate, Oregon State’s Greg Peavey balked, allowing Powell to score and pull UP within a run.
Jones then tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI ground out that brought home Meier.
The score would remain tied for the next seven innings.
Oregon State’s previous four runs came back in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Nash hit a grand slam home run to right field off of Portland starter Brennan Thorpe.
Three relievers followed Thorpe, who last six innings and gave up the four runs on five hits. Freshman Zach Varce was perhaps UP’s most effective pitcher on the night, pitching a scoreless 4.1 innings. He struck out six and gave up just two hits.
Portland, which has struggled in the field of late, committed just one error for the game. The Pilots also totaled 10 hits, while Oregon State had 12 during the four hour and nine minute contest.
Portland next heads north on Interstate 5 to face the Washington Huskies on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in Seattle, Wash.
