BEAUMONT, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots combined for the third lowest score during the final round to tie for 11th place overall at the Braveheart Classic, which concluded at the Oak Valley Golf Club on Tuesday. All five Pilots shot a 77 or better during the final round of the three-round, 54-hole tournament to give Portland a 298.
Only tourney champ Cal Poly (288) and third-place finisher UC Santa Barbara (290) had a better score during Tuesday’s afternoon round. Cal Poly totaled a 900 to finish eight strokes better than runner-up and tournament host UC Riverside. UCSB finished with a 910.
UC Riverside teammates Nick Paez and Spencer Paschall both fired a four-over par 220 to share medalist honors. Cal Poly’s Michael O’Brien was a stroke back to finish alone in third place.
Portland totaled a 942 at the 16-team tourney after opening with a 331 on Monday and a 313 during Tuesday morning’s second round. The second round, which was originally scheduled for Monday, was pushed back to Tuesday after play was halted due to darkness.
Sophomore Terence Macatangay was Portland’s top individual finisher, tying for 36th place with a 234. Freshman Jake Wagner (235, t41st) was a stroke behind Macatangay, while sophomore Thomas Robertson (236, t47th) was a stroke behind Wagner. Robertson had Portland’s low round on Tuesday, firing a final round 73 on the par 72 course.
Senior Joel Johnson came in with a two-over 74 during the third round and tied for 62nd overall with a 239. Freshman Justin Smithhisler capped Portland’s scoring with a 242.
Next week, the Pilots travel to Fresno, Calif., for the Fresno State Lexus Classic at Washington Country Club. The two-day tourney begins on Monday, March 10.
