PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Oregon State Beavers cruised to a 16-0 win over the Portland Pilots on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The Pilots drop their second straight game to a ranked team and are now 6-4 on the season.
Oregon State improves to 4-3.
The Beavers totaled 18 hits and used 21 position players on the day. Oregon State scored in every inning except the first and ninth en route to the win. Joey Wong finished with five hits, including a solo home run. John Wallace, who belted a three-run home in the top of the sixth, and Ryan Ortiz each knocked in three runs.
OSU used four pitchers on the day, with freshman Tanner Robles (1-0) picking up the win.
Portland starter David Gruener (0-1) was saddled with loss. He went 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Only two of the runs were earned, as the Pilots committed two costly errors during the first few innings and trailed 5-0 after three.
OSU then added two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Seniors Eric Brown and Brandon Howard had UP’s only two hits on the day.
Portland next heads to Northern California for the River City Classic. The Pilots open play at the classic with a pair of games on Thursday in Davis, Calif. UP first plays Utah Valley at 10:00 a.m. before taking on tournament co-host UC Davis at 2:00 p.m.
