Pilots sixth after day one; tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. --- Freshman Justin Smithhisler shot a 3-over par 147 to lead the Portland Pilots after day one of the West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championships hosted by Chambers Bay Golf Course. The Pilots finished at 601 (+25) and are alone in sixth place after 36 holes. The final round will be played on Tuesday at the par 72, 7,164-yard course.
Smithhisler sits in a tie for ninth place, while sophomore Terence Macatangay is tied for 14th at 5-over (149).
San Diego took the lead with a team score of 580. The Pilots are trailing fifth place Santa Clara (597) by four strokes and are just 10 strokes back of 44th-ranked Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s.
San Diego’s Darrin Hall and Loyola Marymount’s Jason D’Amore jumped out to the individual lead tied at 2-under par 142.
The Pilots were consistent in both rounds, finishing the morning at 301 and coming back for a team score of 300 in the afternoon. Portland’s top four all finished the second round at 3-over 75.
