Terence Macatangay and Justin Smithhisler named All-WCC; Bill Winter shares Coach of the Year honor
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots shot a final round 304 amid windy weather conditions to move up one spot and finish fifth at the West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championships hosted by Chambers Bay Golf Course. The Pilots finished at 905 (+41) at the par 72, 7,164-yard course. Sophomore Terence Macatangay led the way individually in a tie for seventh place at 6-over par 222, after firing a final round 73.
Macatangay was named to the All-WCC Team for his effort, while freshman teammate Justin Smithhisler earned honorable mention All-WCC honors after tying for ninth place at 7-over par 223. Smithhisler finished tops among all freshmen at the tournament. Portland head coach Bill Winter shared the WCC Coach of the Year award with Scott Hardy (Saint Mary’s) and Tim Mickelson (San Diego).
Portland rallied throughout the day and at one point sat alone in fourth place. Only Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s carded better team scores on Tuesday than the Pilots.
San Diego came away with the team title at 888, while Pepperdine and Saint Mary’s tied for second at 892. LMU edged the Pilots by two strokes and finished at 903. Santa Clara (910), San Francisco (912) and Gonzaga (922) rounded out the field.
San Diego’s Jake Yount won the second hole of a sudden death playoff over Saint Mary’s Chadd Cocco to claim medalist honors. Both golfers finished at 2-over par 218.
