PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior OF Danny Meier belted a two-run home run and freshman right-hander Owen Jones picked up his first collegiate win as the Pilots shutout the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 7-0 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
Portland (17-20) used a plethora of pitchers as seven hurlers combined on the three-hit shutout. Jones (1-1) started the game and worked 4.0 innings. He struck out five and surrendered two hits.
Relievers Ben Pressler, Brian Yoakum, Matthew Lange and Zach Varce each pitched a scoreless inning, while Peter Beringhaus and Ed Wakefield combined to work the scoreless seventh inning. Yoakum, a senior, struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Logan Smiley (1-6) picks up the loss for the Pioneers (11-22), who sent five pitchers to the hill. Smiley allowed just one run on one hit and three walks in 2.0 innings. He forced in the game’s first run with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second inning.
The Pilots did most of their damage at the plate against relievers Weston Chambers and Alex St. Pierre. After Chambers retired the first batter he faced in the bottom of the third, junior LF Bryant Kraus drilled a base hit to left field. Meier followed with a towering shot over the center field fence to make it 3-0 in Portland’s favor. The homer is Meier’s team-leading eighth of the season.
St. Pierre then spelled Chambers and got out of the inning. After holding the Pilots to a scoreless fourth inning, Chambers was touched for four runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and no outs, freshman 3B Kevin Armijo made it a 4-0 game with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Meier. Senior C Eric Brown brought home the second run of the inning with a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield.
Then with two outs and two on, freshman SS Riley Henricks extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run double to center field that made it 7-0.
Sophomore 2B Clayton Shaw finished with a game-high three hits for the Pilots, who out-hit the Pioneers 15-3. Meier, Kraus, Armijo and junior DH Paul Crowder each had two hits on the day.
The Pilots next travel to Spokane, Wash., for a three-game West Coast Conference series against the Gonzaga Bulldogs this weekend. The first game between the Pilots and Bulldogs is set for Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
