SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- University of Portland senior midfielder Leland Wright became the second Pilot men’s soccer player this season to earn West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors. Wright tallied the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win over Northwest rival Washington Friday evening in a nationally televised contest on Fox Soccer Channel.
With the match tied at 1-1 entering the second period, Wright provided the decisive tally in the 53rd minute after a nice through ball by teammate Collen Warner. After running past a UW defender, Wright one-timed his attempt to the lower left of the goal and past the diving Husky goalkeeper.
Wright joins sophomore teammate Frankie Lopez as the other Pilot to be recognized this month. Lopez was the Sept. 2 honoree after scoring four goals at the Nike Invitational.
A native of Eugene, Ore., Wright now has a goal and an assist on the season.
The Pilots (2-2-1) will be in action this weekend at the Husky Fever Classic in Seattle, Wash. Portland will face Cal State Fullerton on Friday at 4 p.m. and New Mexico on Sunday at 11 a.m.
