SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland junior Collen Warner and sophomore Frankie Lopez each netted a goal as the Pilots shutout at the Cal State Fullerton Titans 2-0 on the final day of the Husky Fever Classic at Husky Soccer Stadium. UP sophomore keeper Austin Guerrero made six saves for his first shutout of the season.
The Pilots will enter play in the West Coast Conference with a 3-2-2 overall record. The Titans are now 2-6-0 this fall.
Tournament host Washington, which won both of its games during the weekend, is the Husky Fever Classic champion. Warner was voted the tournament's offensive MVP. In addition to his goal on Sunday, Warner assisted on UP's strike during a 1-1 draw with 24th-ranked New Mexico on Friday. UNM's Simon Ejdemyr is the tournament's defensive MVP.
Lopez began the scoring with a strike in the 19th minute. The forward, who leads the Pilots and the WCC with six goals this year, intercepted a pass near midfield before attacking the Fullerton frame. Lopez then beat the Titan keeper in a one-v-one opportunity.
The lead would stand for the rest of the first half as UP entered the locker room with a 1-0 advantage.
Down a goal, the Titans came out firing in the second half, sending 13 shots at the Portland frame. But Fullerton was denied every time by a stingy UP defense and Guerrero, who made four second-half saves.
In the 84th minute, the Pilots scored on their only shot attempt of the half. Warner finished from 10 yards out on perfectly placed cross by senior Bryan Irwin from the right flank. It’s the first goal this season for Warner, who has a team-high three assists. Irwin picks up his first assist of the fall.
The Titans finished with a 17-8 advantage in shots, while Portland held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Fullerton goalkeeper Kevin Puder made three stops on the day.
The Pilots next face conference and northwest rival Gonzaga at Merlo Field on Friday. UP and the Zags are set to go at 7:00 p.m.
