PORTLAND, Ore. --- Both Collen Warner and Jarad vanSchaik scored a goal and handed out an assist to help the 16th-ranked Portland Pilots defeat the Loyola Marymount Lions 3-1 in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer game on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. Ryan Kawulok also scored for Portland, which improves to 7-2-2 (2-1-1 WCC) on the season.
LMU falls to 6-5-0 and 1-2-0 in the conference.
Kawulok started the scoring for the Pilots with a goal in the 12th minute on a feed from vanSchaik. VanSchaik found Kawulok near the left post, where the sophomore was able to drive a shot into the back of the netting for his third goal of the fall.
Just six minutes later, Warner notched his team-high fifth goal of the season. Ricardo Carrillo, who picked up an assist on the play, began the play by cracking a shot that was knocked down by LMU’s keeper Max Young. Warner was there to put away the rebound and give Portland a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the halftime locker room.
Ten minutes into the second half, vanSchaik made it a 3-0 UP lead with his second goal of the year. Warner set up the play with a pass to vanSchaik at the top of the 18-yard box. VanSchaik then took a couple of touches before finding the lower left corner of the net.
Portland’s junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero nearly came away with the shutout, but LMU was able to score on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. Guerrero finished with two saves on the day, while Young made two stops in 45 minutes of action. Patrick Simpson played between the pipes during the second half and made one save.
The Lions finished with a slim 11-10 advantage in shots and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Pilots next return to the road for a WCC tilt against the San Francisco Dons on Friday in San Francisco. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
