MEN’S RECAP
The Portland Pilots placed fourth among a loaded 10-team field at the Bill Dellinger Invitational Friday at Springfield Country Club. Sophomore Alfred Kipchumba paced Portland with a sixth place finish, while true freshmen Joash Osoro and Trevor Dunbar also finished in the top 10.
Portland finished with 73 team points, two shy of top-ranked Oregon. Preseason No. 9 Alabama won the event with 53 points, followed by No. 12 BYU with 63 points. Portland entered the meet ranked No. 8 nationally.
The Alabama duo of Tyson David and Moses Kiptoo finished first and second, respectively. David posted an 8K time of 23:37.71, four seconds ahead of Kipchumba.
Osoro, who won the West Coast Preview at Pier Park as an unattached runner in early September, showed well in his first varsity meet. He crossed the line at 23:48.49 and was trailed shortly thereafter by fellow frosh Trevor Dunbar (23:51.25).
Senior Tommy Betterbed (20th) and junior Robert Cosby (29th) rounded out the scoring for the Pilots.
Oregon, the host of the event, is the two-time defending national champions and edged Portland to win last year’s Bill Dellinger Invitational by seven points.
Portland’s ‘B’ squad will compete at the Charles Bowles Invitational this Saturday at Bush Park in Salem, Ore. The varsity team will be back in action at the NCAA Pre-National meet Oct. 17.

WOMEN’S RECAP
An inexperienced Portland squad gained valuable experience against elite competition as the Pilots placed ninth out of the 10 team Bill Dellinger Invitational field Friday at Springfield Country Club. Sophomore Lyndy Davis paced Portland by finishing 34th individually. Davis was the only harrier on the roster that competed in last year’s Bill Dellinger Invitational, as head coach Ian Solof had many key runners unavailable.
Six of the eight Pilot runners in the event were underclassmen, while five were competing at the varsity level for the first time.
Villanova won the 5K event with 22 total points. Host Oregon finished second at 41 points, while Baylor (86), UTEP (109) and Colorado State (131) rounded out the top five.
Villanova’s Shiela Reid was the individual champion with a time of 16:22.92.
Portland’s ‘B’ squad concludes a busy weekend at the Charles Bowles Invitational on Saturday at Bush Park in Salem, Ore.
