Box Score
MORAGA, Calif. --- Portland junior Jarad vanSchaik scored the equalizer in the 69th minute to help the No. 18 Pilots earn a 1-1 draw with the Saint Mary’s Gaels in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Stadium. The Pilots improve to 6-1-2 (1-0-1 WCC) on the year and run their unbeaten streak to eight straight games.
vanSchaik’s goal came with the Pilots trailing 1-0 18 minutes into the second half. The goal came after a lengthy UP possession that resulted with senior Collen Warner slotting a pass to vanSchaik inside the 18-yard box. vanSchaik then went top shelf for his first goal of the season, knotting the score at 1-1. It’s the team-high third assist for Warner.
The two teams then played to a stalemate during the next 42 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods. Neither team seriously threatened the goal during the extra time.
The Pilots outshot the Gaels (5-1-3, 1-0-1 WCC) 12-9 and held a sizable 13-4 advantage in corner kicks. vanSchaik led the Portland attack with four shots.
Portland junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero made three saves on the day, while SMC’s Doug Harrick countered with five stops.
The Gaels goal came with just seven seconds remaining in the first half. On a long throw in towards the middle of the penalty box, Jason Coehlo came flying in to put home a loose ball from 15 yards out. The goal went unassisted and is Coehlo’s first of the season.
The Pilots next return home to play their first game at Merlo Field in a month. On Friday night, Portland welcomes San Diego to The Bluff for a 7:00 p.m. WCC match. UP then plays LMU on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
