PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland sent its four seniors off in style as the Pilots ended the regular season with a convincing 5-0 win over the San Francisco Dons in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer game on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. The Pilots received goals from five different players, including senior Collen Warner who had a goal and an assist.
Portland keeps their hopes of the post-season alive with the win. The Pilots, who finish the regular season with a 10-5-5 overall record and a 4-4-4 mark in the WCC, will learn its postseason fate on the NCAA selection show, which is scheduled to air at 2:30 p.m. (PST) on ESPNews on Monday.
Sunday marked the final regular season appearance for UP’s four seniors at Merlo Field. Warner, Drew Chrostek, Logan Emory and Greg Rouse were honored with a pre-game ceremony. Rouse sang the National Anthem before the match.
Leading 1-0 at the half, the Pilots poured it on after the break with four second-half goals. In the 54th minute, Warner made it a two-goal advantage when he finished on a perfect feed from Marc Tonkel. Tonkel, who scored his first collegiate goal and first game-winner in the first half, picked up his sixth assist on the season.
The lead was 3-0 moments later when junior Jarad vanSchaik scored on a break away. vanSchaik also assisted on Tonkel’s first-half game-winner. Junior Vlastimir Davidovic was next to find the back of the net for Portland, as he too scored on a breakaway. And freshman Colin Anderson capped the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 90th minute. Anderson was able to finish on a feed from Davidovic from the left flank.
It was the second time this season that Portland has scored five goals in a game.
UP junior keeper Austin Guerrero was outstanding in goal, making three saves to pick up his fifth shutout of the season. USF’s Brendan Roslund finished with three saves, while his second-half replacement Bryce Boyd made one stop.
The Dons finish the season at 7-10-2 and 4-7-1 in the WCC.
