Portland senior Sifrash Ademe has been added to the 10,000 meter field of the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it was announced on Sunday. The event is scheduled for Thursday, June 11 at 8:55 p.m. (CT).
Ademe earned qualification because of her run at the Cardinal Invitational earlier this season. Her time of 34:37.54 shaved over 19 seconds off of her previous person best.
"Sifrash has done an amazing job all year especially while balancing her nursing clinicals and now summer school,” Portland women’s track head coach Ian Solof said. “She has worked very hard and I am really proud of her accomplishment. She certainly deserves to run in the NCAA meet."
Ademe will be joined at the national meet by UP men’s runner Alfred Kipchumba. Kipchumba qualifed for the men’s 5,000 meter event with the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday, June 10 at 9:25 a.m. (CT) with the finals on Friday, June 12 at 8:40 p.m. (CT). The championships will be held at John McDonnell Field and be hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Portland has now had at least one national meet competitor in 18 consecutive seasons and this marks the ninth time since 1992 that at least two Pilot competitors earned invitations.
