BURLINGTON, Vt. --- Portland freshman midfielder Ricardo Carrillo scored the equalizer in the 64th minute to give the Pilots a 1-1 draw against the Vermont Catamounts at the Smith Barney Classic at Centennial Field on Friday. The Pilots and Catamounts would follow Carrillo’s strike with 46 minutes of scoreless soccer.
Portland’s record remains even on the season at 1-1-1, while host school Vermont moves to 0-3-1.
The Pilots dominated time of possession throughout the match, but it was the Catamounts who struck first. Barely five minutes into the game, D.J. Edler put away a rebound to give Vermont the early 1-nil lead. On a loose ball in front of the UP goal, T.J. Gore fired a shot that was saved by Portland junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero. But Guerrero was unable to grab hold of the ball, allowing Edler the chance at the back of the net.
Still 1-0 in the second half, Portland gained possession in the right wing before a cross was sent into the area. Junior forward Ryan Luke was there and flicked the ball on past two defenders to Carrillo near the left post. After the ball took a bounce, a composed Carrillo unleashed a side volley inside the near post.
Later in the second half, UP senior Collen Warner had a great opportunity from four yards in front of the Vermont net. But Warner was unable to finish after the ball took a suspect bounce on Centennial Field’s turf.
Neither team was able to find the net again during the next 26 minutes of regulation or during two 10 minute overtimes.
The Catamounts outshot the Pilots 12-11 on the night, with Guerrero making nine saves. Vermont’s Tom Critz countered with six stops. Each team had three corner kicks.
Portland senior Logan Emory was active, leading the squad with three shots. Both Warner and junior Jarad vanSchaik finished with two attempts.
The Pilots next conclude their stay in Vermont with a match against the New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday. Kick off is set for 8:00 a.m. (Pacific).
