SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland sophomore Ryan Kawulok and freshman Colin Barich both found the back of the net as the Pilots blanked Cal Poly 2-0 on Friday at the Husky Fever Classic at Husky Soccer Field. Portland’s defense was stifling as junior goalkeeper Austin Guerrero was forced to make just one save for his second shutout this season.
Guerrero now has 13 shutouts in his career, which ranks fifth all-time in program history.
The Pilots outshot the Mustangs 20-9 to easily register their most strikes during a game this season. Portland (4-1-1) also wins its third straight match and runs its unbeaten streak to five games. Cal Poly drops to 2-5-0.
After 70 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore Ryan Kawulok became first Pilot to score two goals this season to give the Pilots a 1-nil lead. On a corner kick, junior Jarad vanSchaik whipped a hard ball into the box. Kawulok flew in from the back post and headed a shot into the right corner of the net. vanSchaik picks up his second assist on the year.
It took just three minutes more for Portland to make it a 2-0 game when freshman Colin Barich scored his second goal of the fall. After a UP cross was deflected, Marc Tonkel was able to feed Barich with a pass. Barich took over from there and slotted a low ball into the right corner for a great finish. Tonkel gets credit for his first collegiate assist.
The Pilots assaulted the Cal Poly goal all afternoon as keeper Brett Finkelstein finished with nine saves. UP held a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Portland senior Collen Warner attempted eight shots on the night, with four of them on-goal.
The Pilots are set to play one more game at the Husky Fever Classic before returning to Portland. UP will try to claim the tourney title on Sunday when it faces No. 14 Creighton at 10:00 a.m.
