LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Portland junior Ricardo Carrillo scored twice to help lead the Pilots to a 3-1 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer game at Sullivan Field on Friday afternoon. The win is the fourth in a row for the Pilots, who are also riding a five match unbeaten streak.
Portland, which also got a goal and an assist from Steven Evans, improves to 9-6-2 overall and evens its record at 4-4-1 in the WCC. LMU is also 4-4-1 in the conference, while dropping to 6-10-1 overall.
Carrillo’s first goal came in the 13th minute to give the Pilots the early 1-nil lead. On a cross from Evans into the box, Carrillo finished with a header into the top of the net, beating LMU goalkeeper Max Young.
The score remained 1-0 until the Lions were able to equalize on a header from Dylan Seeman. Off of a corner kick to the center of the box, Seeman elevated for his second goal of the year. Fernando Barba picked up the assist.
Evans’ goal came on penalty kick nine minutes into the second half, and it will go into the books as the game-winner. Evans easily registered his fifth goal of the season to give the Pilots a lead that they’d hold onto. UP was awarded the free shot after LMU committed a foul inside the 18-yard box.
Carrillo’s insurance goal came in the 75th minute and essentially put the game out of reach. This time he finished on a well-timed thru ball from Brenden McAleese. McAleese slotted a pass towards the left post that Carrillo put away for his fifth goal of the season, which gave the Pilots a comfortable 3-1 lead. It’s the first career point and assist for McAleese.
Portland goalkeeper Justin Baarts had to make just two saves on eight shots from LMU. Young finished with three saves on 10 Portland attempts. Six shots by the Pilots were on-goal.
The Pilots will next look to continue their climb up the WCC standings as they travel to San Diego, Calif., for a league game against the San Diego Toreros on Sunday. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
