PORTLAND, Ore. --- Former Portland Pilots standout goalkeeper Austin Guerrero has signed to play professionally for the Tigres of Mexico’s First Division. The Tigres, who are located in Monterrey, Mexico, won the 2011 Mexican First Division Championship.
“I am extremely happy to have signed with such a monumental club,” said Guerrero. “The team consists of internationals from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and the United States, so there is an incredible amount of talent and experience on the field with me every day.”
The Tigres’ roster includes Mexican National Team midfielder Carlos Saucedo and American John Bornstein, a regular of the U.S. National Team.
“Right now I am soaking up everything I can,” added Guerrero, who has dual U.S. and Mexican citizenship. “I’m very thankful for the preparation the University of Portland gave me. The UP coaching staff also did a great job preparing me for the amount of professionalism that’s expected at this level.”
Guerrero (2007-10) was a four-year starter for the Pilots, and he earned All-WCC accolades each year on The Bluff, including three first-team selections. He finished his career as the WCC’s all-time leader in shutouts during league contests, and he finished tied with Luis Robles as the all-time leader in saves in UP history with 346 stops. Guerrero’s 22 career shutouts rank third all-time in program history, while his 1.17 GAA is seventh.
