Box Score
MORAGA, Calif. --- After the Portland Pilots had tied the score twice, Adam Tariq put Saint Mary’s ahead for good with the game-winner in the 73rd minute as the Gaels escaped with a 3-2 win in West Coast Conference men’s soccer game played on Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Stadium. Portland played a man-down for the game’s final 30 minutes after Ricardo Carrillo was issued a red card in the second half.
Trailing 2-1 in the 64th minute, the Pilots shook off the red card and scored the equalizer while playing short-handed. Dustin Munger sent a cross into the box where Steven Evans was able to bury a shot into the left corner of the net for a 2-2 tie.
The goal is Evans’ team-best 12th of the year.
The 2-2 tie would hold for the next nine minutes before Tariq found the back of the net. Tariq’s shot from 12 yards out took a deflection before going in, and it’s his fourth of the year.
The Gaels would on from there to improve to 9-3-3 overall and to 5-2-1 in the WCC. Portland drops to 6-8-1 overall and to 4-4-0 in the conference.
Portland originally tied the score when Carrillo registered his fifth goal of the year in the 55th minute. Jaime Velasco sent a well-placed service into the 18-yard box, and Carrillo put the shot away to tie the score at 1-1. Moments later Bobby Conner gave the lead back to Saint Mary’s with a goal in the 58th.
Nathan Arambula scored the first goal of the game in the 44th minute, allowing the Gaels to take the 1-nil lead into the halftime locker room.
Saint Mary’s finished with a slight 13-11 edge in shots, while Portland goalkeeper Justin Baarts made five saves.
Portland next returns home for a pair of WCC games at Merlo Field next weekend. On Friday night the Pilots are set to host LMU at 7 p.m. San Diego then visits for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
