Rebound Happy Pilots Handcuff Vandals
MOSCOW, ID --- Kari Luttinen and Amy Pupa each recorded double-doubles, leading the Portland Pilots to their first win of the season on Friday night. Cassandra Thompson added 14 rebounds as Portland picked up 60 team rebounds in the 62-56 win over the Idaho Vandals at the Memorial Gym.
Portland improves to 1-2 with the victory while Idaho falls to 0-3.
Portland's 60 team rebounds led to 20 second chance points and 32 points in the paint, giving them the edge to overcome a 10 point halftime deficit.
With 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Pilots still trailed by 10 when Pupa came up with a block and one of her 14 boards on the night. The play led to a layup by freshman Annika Holopainen and the start of a 19-4 Portland run.
Holopainen would add another layup and three rebounds during the run, but Idaho remained within three as the clock passed under the one minute mark.
A steal by sophomore Jasmine Wooton and a quick Vandal foul gave the Pilots a two-possession lead with 38 seconds left. After Idaho missed back-to-back free throws and a three pointer, Wooton corralled a rebound and iced the win with a pair of free throws.
Wooton finished with six points on the night as Portland was led by Luttinen’s 18. Luttinen added 10 boards for her first career double-double. Pupa, meanwhile, created problems for Idaho all-around. The junior forward grabbed 14 boards to go with 12 points, four blocks, and four assists.
Portland is now halfway done with its six game road trip to open the season. The Pilots head to Cheney, Wash., now to play the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sunday at 2 p.m.
