FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Cal State Northridge Matadors topped the Portland Pilots 4-0 in the season opener for both teams Friday afternoon at the Wilson Titan Classic at Titan Stadium. The Matadors had three goals at the half before adding one more after the break.
Portland opens the season at 0-1-0, while the Matadors are 1-0-0.
The Pilots found themselves down early as the Matadors struck with the game’s first goal in the 22nd minute. Sagi Lev-Ari took a crack from outside the box and was able to find the back of the net to make it a 1-nil Northridge lead.
After Portland freshman Jaime Velasco sent a shot wide and senior Colin Anderson had his attempt saved, Northridge’s Edwin Rivas made it a 2-0 game when he scored off of a feed from Yuval Barak. Barak had made a long run down the left sideline before finding Rivas with a cross.
Moments later the Matadors took control of the game with their third goal of the first half. Joe Franco was posting up at the top of the box, turned and finished inside the left post.
The in the second half, Sagi-Ari added his second goal of the game to hand Cal State Northridge a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Pilots managed seven shots on the day, while the Matadors countered with 20. Both teams had three corner kicks.
The Pilots next conclude play at the Wilson Titan Classic with a game against host Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
